Following its UK premiere at Grimmfest’s digital festival last December, director, co-writer and actor Michael May’s low budget piece of cosmic horror is getting a digital release from GrimmVision.
Trish Bostwick (Tara Perry) works for an online magazine where she spends her days compiling top tens and then posting inflammatory remarks in the comments under an alias in order to help drum up traffic. When she latches on to the report of a recently missing hiker that may be connected to other disappearances she convinces her editor to let her pursue the story.
Her investigations take her to a remote hospital in New Hampshire where the inmates all take part in strange art therapies and where the doctors seem to be distinctly odd. Driving away she encounters a man armed with a knife who is trying to escape the place, after which she wakes up in one of the hospital beds, herself now a patient. What exactly is going on and is the whole thing the front for some esoteric cult?
You can probably guess the answer to that one. WHERE DARKNESS DWELLS is half a reasonably decent ultra low-budget film, but once things start to get strange the movie doesn’t really know what to do with itself. The “ancient book” of magic that is all of “two hundred years old” will raise a smile from many reading this who no doubt have older and better behaved books on their own shelves, although I suppose these things have to be written sometime. Unfortunately the whole thing is all just a little bit too homemade and just not sufficiently odd enough for that to count in its favour.
