The new film from ADJUSTMENT BUREAU director George Nolfi is getting a digital release on Amazon Prime from Signature Entertainment.
It's three years since an apocalyptic event in which huge impregnable insect-type creatures appeared from beneath the ground and wiped out most of the earth's population overnight. The only people to survive were those living at an elevation of over 8000 feet. Now what's left of humankind lives in small isolated communities above what is known as 'the line'.
Will (Anthony Mackie) is a single father whose wife was killed in a previous expedition below the line. His young son Hunter (Danny Boyd Jr) suffers from a chronic lung disease that requires repeated treatments with a special filter. When the supply of filters runs out Will has to journey with grumpy but brilliant physicist Nina (Morena Baccarin) and Katie (Maddie Hasson) to the nearest hospital which, of course, is well below the line. Will has a plan, though, which involves going through an old mine system. But didn't the creatures originate from underground?
Obviously a low budget effort, ELEVATION benefits from the presence of both Mackie and Baccarin who manage to provide likeable performances. The CGI monsters are fun in a SyFy channel kinds of way, and while there's quite a lot of talking, there are at least a couple of action sequences that are well put together. It would have helped if there had been a few more, of course, and the film peters out a bit instead of building to a climax, but if you're fans of the leads and fancy a bit of undemanding monster action this may hold your attention for 90 minutes. Here's the trailer:
George Nolfi's ELEVATION is out on Amazon Prime from Signature Entertainment on Saturday 8th February 2025
